The Second Rape – Thanks to Mason/Surplusvalue - Lyrics by Aus Rotten
After reading this, over 8 times, I had to post it. I was going to bold the parts I found most important but I figure I’ll leave it for you to decide.
Every 45 seconds a woman is raped
Our sexist culture allows no escape
The is violent crime is far from obscurity
When the rate of victims is one in three
Society conditions men to be rapists
And our indifference perpetuates it
With derogatory language that tends to dehumanize
Making it easier for men to victimize
And the pornographic images that help portray
Women as legitimate sexual prey
When sexism is embedded in our judicial system
It’s no surprise why the courts won’t listen
And the role of attacker and survivor become distorted
So the majority of rapes are never reported
The threat of rape is always there
It’s like a poison that saturates the air
A society stricken by a cancerous disease
Where men know they can do as they please
You tell me the punishment for rape
You tell me how much jail time it will take
When one out of three women will be raped
You tell me what it’s going to fucking take
Do you see me in my low cut shirt
Or high heel shoes or a miniskirt
Woman is the victim you desire
You say you can’t resist your predatory fire
You tell me why I stand guilty and accused
You tell me when I’m beaten an abused
When it’s my body that’s been raped and defiled
You tell me why I’m the one on trial
Defense attorney?: Do you know the man who allegedly attacked you?
Victim?: Yes I know the man who raped me.
Defense attorney?: And isn’t this man a friend of yours?
Victim?: Well I thought he was a friend of mine.
Defense attorney?: And were you drinking that night he ‘allegedly attacked you?
Victim?: I had a drink or two but is that a crime?
Defense attorney?: I’ll ask the questions if you don’t mind!
-What were you wearing: How did you act?
Victim?: My wardrobe isn’t an invitation for a man to attack.
-I didn’t act in any way to bring this on. Why am I on trail? What did I do wrong?
Defense attorney?: Could you tell the jury why you let this happen?
Victim?: I was in shock. I couldn’t stop him.
Defense attorney?: You claim that you were raped but how do we know?
Victim?: I said no, I said no, no, no!
Defense attorney?: Isn’t it true you’re just a woman scorned?
Victim?: I’m a woman who’s been raped and torn.
Defense attorney?: Your honor, I demand that this case be dismissed,
-it all comes down to her word against his!
I may not have bruises all over my body
But when I went to his room I never would have guessed
That he would force my no to mean a yes
You tell me why I’m guilty of this crime
You tell me why the responsibility is mine
When women suffer a second rape during trial
Courts help rapists to violate and defile.
Rapists are pathetic – be it a boy who takes advantage of a girl right to a drunk husband attacking his wife. Be it a woman who spikes a mans drink. Anyone, and yet when it happens, it is the victim who should feel tortured even more? It is the victim who will be questioned.
According to Australian Crime Facts and Figures in 2003:
82% of sexually assaulted victims were female out of which the highest rate was from the ages 10-14
For males – Sexual assault was highest at the age of 10 and under
Out of this 78% of assaults were commited by someone the victim knew.
How does this happen? More importantly, how is this ignored?

I have no idea what compels someone – man or woman – to rape another. How could someone feel compelled to make someone do what they strongly oppose, let alone defiling something so intimate and precious. Surely it is more then just lust; could lust alone drive someone to commit such a horrendous and heinous crime? I doubt it. So maybe hatred, anger, revenge and violence are other emotions mixed in…
It is ignored the same way everything is ignored. People are generally both ignorant and apathetic to issues that other people face. Or, if they are neither of those, they do not know what they can do to change it. The same way billions are starving, suffering, exploited and oppressed every single day.
It exists because we live in a sexist, patriarchal society. I’m not sure who the blame lies with that but chances are the rich and powerful have some part in their aims of dividing and conquering (in the same fashion of creating the concept of ‘race’), but we, in our apathy and acceptance are also to blame as well, I think.

I diagree, our society is not sexist. Nor does society condition men to be rapists.
Lawyers always bend the truth to make the victim look like the offender. It’s their job. It doesn’t stop at rape, they do it for all crimes. Its crap but thats the grey scale of justice.
Its easy to blame society, or blame the rich and powerful, but instead of complaining and blaming someone, maybe you could do something to try to fix it. Although, one person doesn’t really make a difference, so good luck with that.
The number 1 offenders of sexual assault against people, especially young people (I dont have the statistics) is their family. Most people don’t hear about it because the offenders are close to their victims. Trust me. My mother works for DOCS. Not someplace I would ever work. Blah!
There is help out available for victims of every crime. The fact that we are sympathetic to these victims shows that society isn’t ignorant.

You could narrow it down to the same belief everyone will always have “it will never happen to me”
Perhaps these people, including even myself up until i wrote this post, are just brought up to not know any better? And they see this “it wont happen” as a stable and logical thought? – if i do not do anything to cause it – if i dont provoke – if i take care of myself…
And in all of those… all i see is IF
I dont seek to blame society – nor the rapists – just to point out or highlight the fact that a perfect world is unreachable – only because people are not willing to reach. To reach to a victim of rape, abuse, death, bullying etc.
Radmore:
Our society is sexist – in every single second – sexism is like oxygen in its abundance.. however – Sexism against who is questionable – its evident in the lyrics of this song even – in the description of society conditioning men to be rapists – yet not a woman?
Yes, it is their job, they twist words and put things into peoples mouths all for the sake of winning – like these peoples lives are a game – but once again; i wasnt blaming the law system, lawyers, society or the rich and powerful – and i think the lyrics, whilst on the surface are based on the ideal of putting women on trials and subsequently raping them of their dignity, pride etc, are corely aimed at raising a sense of awareness.
The Australian crime site i found did state:
And people know this is happening, yet we struggle to find something to do?
If some, if not most, of society is not ignorant… then what are they? Is it that they just dont care? Is it that they “cant do anything” – sympathy doesnt give anything back to a victim – if society as a whole wished to make a change, it would, but until then – is it ok to overlook the suffering and violation that is all that exists to these victims?

well sarah, all is not wrong with society… did u know that it is in the ‘process’ (not sure if its law now) that victims of a rape in court do not have to be cross examined. Before it was more the victim proving that they were raped, were as now its the offender who has to prove that they did not rape the victim… mmm… well i think its fair on the rights of the vitcim.. but i totally see what ur saying, it sucks, its fucked but it is only until now that we have relised as a society that this is wrong, so thats a BIG step, right?
